Teaching to Transform: How English Classes Are Opening Doors in Jaco

Interviewer: Why did Six Eight Ministries decide to focus on teaching English as part of its outreach?

Six Eight Ministries: In Jaco, the economy is driven by tourism, and if you can speak English, your job opportunities multiply. Many locals earn $2 or $3 an hour working in resorts, then return to poor neighborhoods. By teaching English, we give them a tool to build better futures.

Interviewer: What does the program look like on the ground?

Six Eight Ministries: We offer both beginner and advanced conversational classes. Our teachers are fluent and focus on practical English — the kind that helps people in real job settings. It’s a mix of learning, laughter, and community.

Interviewer: Have you seen any life-changing success stories from these classes?

Six Eight Ministries: Definitely. One man I taught had a low-paying factory job. After a year and a half of English classes, he was able to land a position with Tonga Airlines, tripling his income. It completely changed his life — and that’s what motivates us to keep going.

Interviewer: That’s incredible. How do you see this connecting to your larger mission?

Six Eight Ministries: It ties back to the gospel. When we equip people with skills and dignity, we reflect God’s love. It’s not about handouts — it’s about hand-ups. Teaching English gives people confidence, opportunity, and a tangible glimpse of hope.
